Management & life · The people around the dairy

NPC Favor

Living neighbours. Favours, standing, and a parish that remembers you.

In the dairy year

Spring favours are a harvest or a fence when you can spare the machine. Winter is standing: who will talk, who will hire, who remembers that you showed up.

The dairy year is not only dirt and milk. It is a parish.

The feel

Neighbours walk roads, sleep, work, and chat. They have needs and personalities. Relationship runs from hostile to best friend. Favours pay in money and in standing. Gifts exist once you are known. Rain sends them home.

Their ground can touch yours. Neglect next door is a difficulty dial, not a jump scare you cannot turn down.

How it works

NPCs spawn at buildings around the map (shops, stations, production points, farms) as visible people with walk and idle animations. They follow the road network, not through fences.

They are driven by four needs: energy, social, hunger, and work satisfaction. A tired neighbour goes home. A lonely one looks for a chat. A restless worker heads to the fields early.

Five personalities (hardworking, lazy, social, grumpy, generous) change wake times, work habits, and conversation tone. NPCs also form opinions of each other. Compatible pairs drift toward friendship. Incompatible pairs drift toward rivalry.

Rain and storms interrupt field work. They comment on the weather. Seasons shift wake times and work hours.

Talking

Walk up and press E. The dialog has five actions:

Button What it does When
Talk A conversation topic. +1 relationship, once per day Always
Ask about work What they are doing right now Always
Ask for favor Check progress or request a new one Relationship 25+
Give gift Spend $500 for a standing boost Relationship 30+
Relationship info Level, benefits, next unlock, favour stats Always

Favours are real jobs: harvest, haul, fix a fence, deliver seed. Completing them pays money and relationship.

Standing

Friendship is 0 to 100, in seven tiers:

Level Range What unlocks
Hostile 0–9 Nothing
Unfriendly 10–24 Basic talk
Neutral 25–39 Favours, 5% discount
Acquaintance 40–59 Borrow equipment, 10% discount
Friend 60–74 They may offer help, 15% discount
Close Friend 75–89 Gifts and shared resources, 18% discount
Best Friend 90–100 Full benefits, 20% discount

Positions, relationships, active favours, personality, and needs save with the farm. Ten languages. Settings let you turn the system off, cap how many neighbours spawn, set work hours and favour frequency, and hide names.

On the Farm Tablet the NPC Favor app shows town reputation (0–100, Respected / Neutral / Poor), active favours with hours remaining, and every relationship sorted by score (Friend / Neutral / Cold) with their role.

Type npcHelp in the console for the command list.

How you use it

The outs

Worker Costs and Pro Staff are other people-chapters. Seasonal Crop Stress can add an agronomist with soil-sample and irrigation favours. Workplace Triggers can build standing with the NPC you work for. Soil can notice neighbour ground when that bridge is live. None of them replace this parish.

What you need

This mod alone is a living map. The rest of the suite does not require it.

How it connects

In the dairy year these sit next to this chapter. None are required.
