Before the year starts
Soil Fertilizer gives every field its own nitrogen, pH, organic matter, compaction and moisture, and the map shows each one. A hollow holds water and stays wet; the ridge drains and dries first - so the two halves of one field can need different treatment.
Machinery packs the headland. Packed ground holds water. Wet ground breeds disease, and you will not see it until you walk the field.
The first test is timing
Seasonal Crop Stress reads the weather and the soil to tell you whether this week is a good or a risky window for drilling: a dry field in a clear stretch is a good window, a wet field with rain coming is not. Walk the field and you will name the disease growing on it before it spreads.
The barn does not wait. Herd health this spring is built from last year's feed.
Water and vigilance
Moisture drops as the weather warms. Irrigation can keep a crop out of stress, but it burns fuel and water. Rain coming? Hold off. Milk has a clock: it ages from Fresh to Condemned on time since collection, so who collects and how often sets the grade you are paid for.
The year is paid out
Fields sown in a good window and watered through stress yield; fields that got a poor start do not. Rotation and tillage write the next years into the organic matter - a legume carries nitrogen over, the same crop twice takes 15% more N, P and K at harvest. The fields slow. The farm does not.
