In the dairy year
Summer drought lifts feed and leans on the herd. Autumn is when you sell the grain you can explain. Winter is when you sit at the Cockpit and see whether a livestock boom lifted milk, or a scare knocked it.
You are not only a farmer. You are a market participant. That is the point of a dairy year that pays wages, fuel, and tax from real cheques.
The feel
Vanilla prices are a known tune. Here they walk during the day and mean-revert toward the vanilla base. World events shove them: weather, trade, a contamination scare, a subsidy. Random World Events can swing a market you did not schedule. You watch the trend. You do not pretend you planned the scare.
Futures let you lock a number months out. Sell the whole wheat stack because today “looks good” and you will remember the spike two days later.
How it works
The price engine runs all the time. Intraday volatility is a random walk, so no two days look the same. If a price spikes or crashes, market forces slowly pull it back toward the vanilla base.
World events inject real modifiers for several days:
| Event | Price effect |
|---|---|
| Drought | +20% to all crops |
| Bumper harvest | −10% to all crops |
| Trade disruption | +12% to export crops |
| Pest outbreak | +8% to specific crops |
| Biofuel initiative | +8% to maize and canola |
| Livestock boom | +8% to feed crops (corn, soybeans, oats) |
| Geopolitical crisis | +15% to all crops |
You can tune which crops feel which events from the in-game screen, including a browse list so you are not guessing fill-type names.
Futures
Open the Market screen (F10 or the Esc tab) and lock a quantity at today’s price for 30, 60, or 90 days. Deliver to any sell point before the deadline. Deliveries count toward active contracts first. Fulfil and you are paid the locked rate even if the spot market has crashed. Miss the deadline and you pay a 15% default penalty on what you did not deliver.
The Market screen
| Tab | What you see |
|---|---|
| Prices | Live prices, percent change from base, and a session trend graph |
| Events | Active world events and their intensity |
| Contracts | Locked prices, delivery progress, and days left |
On a dedicated server the host owns the price.
If BetterContracts / Futures Mission is present, finishing a harvest mission can trigger a short −8% supply spike. If UsedPlus is present, fulfilling a futures contract helps your credit score and defaulting hurts it. A poor score can raise the default penalty.
How you use it
- Load the farm. Pricing is live from the first day.
- Open the Market screen and read the trend, not only today’s number.
- On a spike, lock a contract if the year ahead matters more than today’s spot.
- Plant, harvest, and deliver before the deadline.
- Watch the Events tab. A drought is often the moment to sell stored grain or write a new contract.
On the Farm Tablet the Market Dynamics app shows status, active world events, and the modifiers the mod is running with.
The outs
Dairy contracts and grain sales read this book. Tax sees the year that resulted. The Financial Cockpit is where you look at it without guessing. Pro Staff, high enough up the ladder, can put a floor under a crash. That floor is the long game, not a day-one gift. Time Guard keeps settlement on the farm calendar.
What you need
This mod alone makes selling a decision. Random World Events add swings you cannot schedule. Farm Tablet is the deep market desk. Time Guard keeps the clock honest. Skip them and prices still move.
How it connects
In the dairy year these sit next to this chapter. None are required.
